According to SAU, St. Russian archaeologists from the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg came across a magnificent stone mausoleum from ancient times.
Ukrainian archaeologists wrote about it on Facebook and also posted photos.
The researchers state: “The ancient structure found is both a public building and a mausoleum, making the find unique not only for the Chersonese but for the entire ancient world.”
The Russians themselves also give information about the finds and excavations. The State Hermitage has released a message citing large-scale archaeological surveys in the Historic and Archaeological Park Tauric Chersonese.
According to the National Center for Resilience, “As of the end of 2014, approximately 500,000 items (main and subsidiary funds) were retained in the funds, of which 300,000 were the entire main fund.”
However, it is not yet known to whom exactly the found artifacts will be transferred. Now the Russians are preparing “transfer acts for restoration for further display outside the museum.”
Chersonese Tauride
Chersonese Taurus has an important place in history as an ancient and Byzantine city-state located in the southwest of Crimea, a peninsula in the Black Sea region. Its rich cultural heritage and strategic location made it an important center of trade, culture and political influence in the ancient world.
The history of the city dates back to the 5th century BC, when it was founded by Greek colonists from Heraclea Pontica (modern Turkey). The city flourished under Greek and then Roman rule, becoming a bustling center for maritime trade and a meeting point of different cultures. It played a decisive role in the defense of the Byzantine Empire against invading forces and served as an important sea fort.
Among the architectural marvels of the city were magnificent temples, public buildings, fortifications, and an extensive network of streets and squares. The Chersonese Tauride had a vibrant cultural and artistic life: theaters, temples and landscapes adorned the city’s landscape.
The city’s inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013 reflects its extraordinary historical and archaeological value. The list acknowledges Tauric Chersonesus as evidence of the cultural exchange and architectural achievements of ancient Greek and Byzantine civilizations.
Today, Chersonese, like the rest of Crimea, is occupied by the Russians.
