Artifacts belonging to the indigenous Muskvim people found on the construction site of the airport in Vancouver

Construction work at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) was halted on August 9, the previous day, after artifacts believed to belong to Muskwim, a group of indigenous peoples from the North American continent, were unearthed. Times Colonist reports.

In the press release from the airport authorities, it was stated that a local group was informed of the artifacts found and they were sent to a laboratory for certification and technical evaluation of possible local heritage items.

According to the construction project of the southern airspace, concrete panels should be replaced, and taxiway and runway intersections should be improved. Electrical work is also done. At the same time, these work in the airspace area are carried out in the southern half of Sea Island, the traditional region of the Muskvim.

Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO of the Vancouver Airports Authority, said the archaeological find points to a “long-standing and enduring connection” between the people of this ethnic group and their ancestral lands.

According to him, the discovery of the artifacts did not come as a surprise, it is planned to work with representatives of the indigenous population to preserve them.

“We are aware that this is an important process and we aim to move forward with YVR on this path,” said Lider.
