According to American analysts, air defense systems now mainly protect the capital region of the Russian Federation, so the Russians were not ready for a drone attack on the Pskov region.
The Russian Federation probably concentrated its air defense in the Moscow region, so a large number of drones could freely attack the airspace in Pskov. This is stated in the report of the Institute for War Studies (ISW) dated 30 August.
According to analysts, Pskov was attacked by a large number of drones. At the same time, the air defense system in the city did not work, and as a result, Russian aircraft were damaged. According to Russian bloggers, more than 20 UAVs were involved in the attack.
The authors of the report noted that on the same day, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that the drone attack on the Central Federal District, which does not include the Pskov region, was repelled. According to him, at least one drone was heading towards the capital of the Russian Federation.
American analysts suggested that the Russians were preparing to attack Moscow or the Moscow region, so this area was better protected.
The ISW concluded that “Russian forces may have focused their air defenses on protecting Moscow and somehow missed an unusually large number of Ukrainian drones.”
Recall that on the night of August 30, explosions were heard on the territory of the Russian Federation, near the local airport in the city of Pskov.
Explosions were also heard in the Moscow, Ryazan, Kaluga, Oryol, Bryansk and Pskov regions of Russia. At the same time, the invaders announced a drone attack on the Sevastopol Bay.
Andriy Yusov, representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, said that 4 Il-76 military transport aircraft were destroyed at the airport in Pskov, Russia.
