SUVs/crossovers they continue to please more and more, conquering market share constantly growing. Now these cars in Europe, have reached another milestone. According to Automotive News Europe, citing data from Dataforce, in the first half of 2023more than half of all new cars sold on the Old Continent were SUVs.
Thus, in the first 6 months of the year, SUV sales increased by 23%, reaching 3.37 million units. Thus, the market share reaches 51% versus 48% for the same period last year.
Looking at the ranking of the best-selling SUVs, we find the Tesla Model Y in first place, which is not surprising since this model has been the best-selling model in Europe several times. In just six months, 138,152 electric SUVs from Elon Musk’s company were sold (207% more than in 2022).
In second place we find Volkswagen T-Rock 104,465 units were registered (+32%), and in third place Toyota Yaris Cross with 96,849 registrations (+49%). The top ten for the semester are as follows:
- Tesla Model Y: 138,152 (+207%)
- Volkswagen T-Rock: 104,465 (+32%)
- Toyota Yaris Cross: 96,849 (49%)
- Volkswagen Tiguan: 90,958 (+43%)
- Dacia Duster: 88,038 (+18%)
- Hyundai Tucson: 83,205 (+6.5%)
- Peugeot 2008: 83,033 (+13%)
- Kia Sportage: 78,175 (+14%)
- Renault Captur: 77,899 (+7.5%)
- Ford Puma: 77,508 (+4.3%)
Thus, SUVs continue to grow and enjoy greater demand from customers. Car manufacturers are investing more and more in this direction, constantly releasing new SUV/crossover models even in small segments. The Small SUV segment sells the most, with 1,133,822 registrations.
The excellent performance of SUVs obviously does not mean that other categories of vehicles are “disappearing.” In fact, in the first half of the year, for example, the number of Dacia Sandero registrations significantly exceeded 120 thousand. The Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa and Renault Clio also performed well, all exceeding 100,000 registrations. The Volkswagen Golf is close to 89 thousand registrations, while the Skoda Octavia stalls just above 83 thousand units.
