Health risk: France wants to ban iPhone sales, Apple protests

Apple denies all accusations and claims its smartphones comply with global and European standards on harmful radiation.

Apple will have to stop selling the iPhone 12 model in France due to excessive levels of electromagnetic radiation. According to Reuters, Jean-Noël Barrot, the junior minister in charge of France’s digital economy, said this in an interview with local media.

The French Electromagnetic Radiation Regulatory Agency (ANFR) notified Apple of its decision after experts conducted tests that showed the smartphone’s specific absorption rate (SAR) was higher than allowed by law. Accredited laboratories found that the absorption of electromagnetic energy by the body during tests simulating the situation of a person holding the phone in his hand or in his trouser pocket is 5.74 watts per kilogram, while in Europe the permissible figure is 4.0 watts per kilogram. At the same time, tests showed that the iPhone 12 meets the standards if it is in a jacket pocket or bag.

EVIL vehicle Specific Absorption Ratetranslated as “specific absorbed power“. This is a value that indicates how much electromagnetic radiation energy is absorbed by the human body per unit time. SAR is measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg). SAR is an important safety indicator in the use of devices that emit electromagnetic waves, such as mobile phones, microwave ovens, etc. etc. There are limits in SAR values for mobile phones that should not be exceeded.

According to Barrot, France will give Apple two weeks to solve the SAR level problem, because it is enough to make minor changes to the software of the smartphones that the American company has sold since 2020. The European Union has set safety limits for SAR values associated with exposure to mobile phones, and scientific research shows that this increases the risk of some types of cancer.

It is important to know that the term “Radiation” is often misunderstood in Ukraine because people translate it literally as “Radiation”. In fact, “Radiation” does not just mean deadly radiation, but also any form of radiation. There are many types of these: ionizing (popularly “radiation”), electromagnetic, infrared, ultraviolet, etc. Emissions from smartphones, routers (Wi-Fi), TVs and other electrical equipment have nothing to do with classical “radiation”. Any electrical device “emits” electromagnetic waves, not “radiation”.

Apple said in a statement on Wednesday that the iPhone 12 model has been certified by many international organizations to meet global emissions standards. The Company has provided ANFR with multiple laboratory and independent third-party results confirming its compliance with SAR standards. The company said it would appeal the findings of AFNR’s review and continue to work with the agency to show that the smartphones meet security requirements.

Focus previously reported that Apple was urging people not to sleep next to the iPhone while charging. The company emphasizes that a branded smartphone should be charged without a case and in a well-ventilated area.
