A group of scientists from Graz University of Technology decided to conduct a study to find out. First, they collected data on bacteria found in 156 types of fruits and vegetables. They then examined the bacteria in 2,500 human stool samples. By comparing these data sets, they discovered something surprising: 2.2% of the bacteria in our guts can be attributed to the fruits and vegetables we eat. Simply put, by eating vegetables and fruits, you populate your gut with good bacteria, which contributes to overall gut health.

The findings also shed light on the big picture of our food’s journey from farm to plate. Scientists emphasized that the way vegetables and fruits are grown and processed can affect the bacterial content in them.
