Volkswagen ID.3, battery passes ADAC test at 100 thousand km October 30, 2023 13

When discussing electric carsone of the topics covered is battery life. Technological evolution has significantly improved battery chemistry, and today batteries suffer from degradation is increasingly decreasing compared to the past. Conducted an interesting battery life test ADAK who drove a Volkswagen ID.3 for almost two and a half years, traveling 100 thousand km.

The conclusion ADAC has come to is that the ID.3 does not need to worry about battery life, even if it is not used according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Let’s dive into the details.

TEST

For the test we used a Volkswagen ID.3 with a battery equipped with one. Power 82 kWh (useful 77 kWh). At the 100 thousand km mark it is State of Heath (SOH)read BMS, was also from 93%. For almost two and a half years of driving, the testers did not operate the car according to Volkswagen recommendations. First, they repeatedly used fast DC speakers.

Secondly, the battery was often recharged to 100% so that it always had the maximum possible range. This is a practice that Volkswagen does not recommend. Therefore, for ADAC, battery life of the ID.3 is not an issue. Indeed, he really appreciated that the car manufacturer advertised the battery’s raw capacity rather than its full capacity, demonstrating greater transparency. In reality, not all brands behave this way. Some introduce their vehicles by listing only the total battery capacity, omitting the buffer that prevents drivers from using a certain portion of the battery’s capacity.

Although the test was positive, ADAC still has some advice for ID.3 buyers. For example, he suggests always perform all updates which is produced by Volkswagen. Throughout the test, in addition to fixing several bugs, updates resulted in, among other things, increase in DC charging power to 170 kW.

The upgrades also had a positive impact on consumption. In particular, the new software significantly improves fuel consumption in winter temperatures from 0 to 5 degrees thanks to improved battery climate control.

The testing of the ADAC Volkswagen ID.3 does not end there. In fact, we strive reach the finish line in 160 thousand km, i.e. mileage for which the battery warranty expires (8 years or 160 thousand km). Given the results obtained so far, ADAC is confident that the state of health (SOH) can be significantly higher than guaranteed by Volkswagen (at least 70% after 8 years or 160 thousand km).
