New Benefit: Scientists Found Willow Bark Extract Effectively Fights Viruses

A study led by Professor Varpu Marjomäki from the University of Jyväskylä found that the extract was effective against both enveloped coronaviruses that cause the common cold and COVID-19, and non-enveloped enteroviruses that cause diseases such as influenza and meningitis. . In particular, there is currently no specific drug directed against enteroviruses, highlighting the potential importance of this discovery.

During the research, experts collected willow bark, processed it into an extract and tested it against various viruses. The extract was found to effectively inhibit viral activity without harming host cells. Interestingly, while the extract prevented the proliferation of Covid-19 in cells, it had a different effect on enteroviruses, completely preventing them from penetrating the cells.

This different effect shows that willow bark extract acts on the surface of viruses with different effects. Microscopic examination showed that enveloped coronaviruses were destroyed by the extract, while non-enveloped enteroviruses were effectively immobilized.

Additionally, when investigating the effectiveness of commercial compounds derived from willow, only the salixin extract was found to exhibit similar antiviral activity. According to the authors, this suggests that the antiviral properties may be due to the combination of bioactive compounds in the tree bark.

The team plans to conduct further research to isolate and identify these compounds, as well as to study their mechanisms of action. This research could pave the way for the development of new antiviral drugs to treat a variety of viruses, including those that cause colds and flu.
