The center of the Milky Way was photographed in different wavelengths of light (X-ray, infrared and optical) by the Chandra, Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes. So the image shows many different objects, including gas bubbles, dust clouds, star explosions and their formation regions.

A group of scientists from NASA has been converting visual data from deep space into sounds for several years. So not a single sound that can be heard in the new symphony comes from the center of the galaxy, it is just an audio interpretation of the data.

Sound waves can be thought of as vibrations traveling between atoms and molecules in the air on Earth. But there is no air in space, only empty space. If you screamed in space, the sound waves you would create would not vibrate, so no one would be able to hear your scream. Even if the center of the galaxy was filled with all kinds of noise, no sound would be heard unless there were enough atoms around for sound waves to pass through. But there aren’t enough atoms here.

To create his symphony, Kastner focused on the resulting sounds after processing data on three key elements of the central image of the Milky Way.

  • The first element is a binary star system seen in X-ray light as a bright blue sphere on the left side of the image.
  • The second element is a group of arcing gas filaments in the center of the image.
  • The third element is the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*, lurking at the center of the Milky Way and located in the lower right of the image.

The composer combined the sound data and converted them into notes to write a symphony. It consists of several parts, and the beginning of the symphony is the left part of the picture, and the end, accordingly, is the right part.

While the light of objects at the top of the image is perceived as higher tone, the intensity of the light also controls the sound level. Stars and compact light sources dissolve into individual notes, while vast clouds of gas and dust create an evolving hum. The strongest part of the symphony is the sound of the field in the lower right corner of the image. This is where Sagittarius A* is located and where its clouds of gas and dust shine brightest.
