Raphael de Temmerman was getting ready to move and his son decided to consider the property. Several experts from the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren visited the house to examine the souvenir, and the next day the family was visited by the police and a report was drawn up.

Father and son said they were surprised when they were told that the staircase decoration was an authentic Pompeian artifact stolen 50 years ago.

“It’s a little crazy to think that tourists are looking at a copy when the original has been hanging here for so long,” Geert de Temmerman told reporters.
