CIA bans analysts from using Telegram – Bloomberg

According to journalists, the US government is increasingly concerned about the possibility of data leaks as a result of unintended use of information.

CIA open source intelligence (OSINT) analysts cannot use their computers to access Telegram, the popular messaging app frequently used by Russian military bloggers covering the war in Ukraine.

According to Bloomberg, the ban applies not only to work computers but also to analysts’ personal devices. This forces them to leave CIA territory to access the app, which has become popular among Russian military bloggers and analysts. People familiar with the situation emphasize that such measures are motivated by the government’s concerns about possible data leaks and unintended use of information.

According to the publication, US intelligence is currently strengthening its efforts in the field of open source intelligence (OSINT). A new OSINT strategy is planned to be implemented in the coming months, aiming to coordinate, collect data and create better tools for more effective work in this area.

But the government fears that the challenge facing OSINT is extracting useful information from the vast amount of information available digitally.

“Our biggest weakness in OSINT was the sheer size of the amount we collected,” says Randy Nixon, director of the CIA’s open source intelligence division.

Nixon’s Office has developed a tool similar to ChatGPT that uses artificial intelligence to sort through an ever-growing stream of data, American journalists write. Now available to thousands of users across the federal government, the tool directs analysts to the most important information and automatically summarizes content.

Let us recall that on January 17, it was learned that channels covering the protests in Russian Bashkortostan had disappeared from the Telegram messenger. Within two days, six Telegram channels disseminating information about events in Bashkiria were blocked.

Previously, a major malfunction occurred in Telegram messenger on December 28, 2023. Users complained that messages were not received and chats were not working.
