Some of the largest animals on Earth can no longer breed: what happened?

Researchers are concerned that the loss of reproductive function could lead to catastrophe and complete extinction of this species.

North Atlantic right whales are a critically endangered species and their numbers are in inexorable decline today. According to IFLScience, results of a new study show that female whales are losing their ability to reproduce due to reductions in body size, due in part to stressors such as climate change.

This is not good news for an already endangered species. Adult North Atlantic right whales can reach 16 meters in length and weigh up to 60 tonnes. Representatives of this species are among the largest animals on Earth, and even the ovaries of females weigh about a ton. But previous studies had already shown that their numbers were inexorably declining.

According to Joshua Stewart of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), research suggests that the maximum length of a whale born today will be, on average, 1 meter shorter than a whale born in 1980. In the new study, scientists focused on understanding whether this reduction in animal size was associated with lower reproductive potential. In simple terms, how many whales with smaller body sizes can females give birth to?

The team used data collected between 1970 and 2020, analyzed it and concluded that a female whale’s body size is closely related to the likelihood of giving birth to a calf. For example, a 14-foot female has a 56% chance of giving birth to offspring, while an 11-foot female has only a 14% chance. The results also show that reduced size worsens health problems in right whales.

North Atlantic right whales are one of the most endangered species on Earth. Their population was on the verge of extinction due to whaling in the late 19th century but never recovered. Today the species numbers only 360 individuals, of which fewer than 70 are reproductively active females.

Researchers note that North Atlantic right whales are suffering from climate change as well as habitat degradation, ocean noise and ship strikes. In addition, they often become victims of fishing gear, with which they are entangled.
