Volkswagen, ID.3 production canceled in Wolfsburg 11 March 2024 6

Volkswagen he reconsidered his production programs. In particular, they have been updated Plant in Wolfsburg. The car manufacturer has therefore decided to cancel production of the ID.3 electric car at this plant. This electric model will continue to be produced at the Zwickau plant (to some extent also in Dresden).

The decision not to move production of the ID.3 to the Wolfsburg plant is part of the German automaker’s plan to contain costs. Christian VollmerVolkswagen production manager commented:

Every euro we don’t have to spend matters. For this reason, we have decided to continue to concentrate ID3 production in Zwickau and make efficient use of the already well-equipped site.

In addition, the original plans included bear only any excess production ID.3 in Wolfsburg. Given the current market trend of declining demand for electric vehicles, this need is not evident. Let us remind you that the launch of small-scale production of an electric car in Wolfsburg was initially planned for the end of 2023.

Therefore, in Wolfsburg for now the main focus will be on the production of cars with internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids, such as Golf and Tiguan. In this regard, Vollmer adds:

These are all very robust models that will support the factory’s production. I am confident that this year for the first time in a long time we will overcome the milestone of 500 thousand cars produced at our main plant.

In any case, even if Wolfsburg’s production plans have changed, they should not change in the medium/long term. In fact, work continues to modernize some lines for the production of electric vehicles. At this plant, essentially, since Electric C-segment SUV coming in 2026 which many already identify as the electric Tiguan.
