7 nominations and the eventual victory that the Oscar nominee couldn’t come up with (video)

Wesley Anderson was not there to accept the award in person, so he was accepted on his behalf by award show hosts Ramy Youssef and Issa Rae.

American film director, screenwriter, actor and producer Wesley Anderson has been nominated for an Academy Award seven times over more than 20 years, finally receiving the coveted statuette. However, he did not come to the Oscar ceremony. Entertainment Weekly has learned what happened.

Anderson received his first nomination in 2001 for his screenplay for Tenenbaums. His work on Moonrise Kingdom (2012) earned him another screenplay nomination, and his work on The Incomparable Mr. Fox (2009) and Isle of Dogs (2018) competed for the title of best animated film.

In 2014, Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel received nine nominations; of these, the candidate himself was nominated for statuettes in the director and screenplay categories, and also competed for the main prize – Best Picture.

Breakthrough 2024

Finally, this year Anderson achieved his first victory – the director took the title in the “Fiction Short Film” category for the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story of the same name. This is one of four films Anderson has made for Netflix.

The story follows Henry Sugar, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a rich man who learns that there is a guru who can see without his eyes. Henry decides to master this skill in order to cheat at gambling. The film also stars Dev Patel and Ben Kingsley.

So why didn’t Anderson show up at the Oscars? He explained his absence in a statement to Entertainment Weekly by saying that he was in Germany, where he started shooting a new movie on the day of the awards ceremony.

Since Anderson was not there to accept the award in person, hosts Ramy Youssef and Issa Rae accepted the award on his behalf.
