The UK should designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces) as a terrorist organization after the attack on writer Salman Rushdie. This opinion was expressed by the candidate for the post of prime minister of the kingdom Rishi Sunak.

“We urgently need a new, strengthened (nuclear – ed.) deal and tougher sanctions, and if we can’t get results, then we should start asking if the JCPOA is in a stalemate. The brutal knife attack on Salman Rushdie should be a wake-up call for the West, and the Iranian reaction to the attack strengthens the case for a ban on the IRGC.”he said in an interview with the Telegraph newspaper.

The publication also recalled the words of the Iranian MP Malek Shariati. He said that Iran could be behind the attack on the writer.

It should be noted that a few years ago, Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini publicly cursed Rushdie in his fatwa, sentencing him to death. The reason was the writer’s novel “Satanic Verses”, which was considered anti-Islamic. Iran is promising a multi-million dollar reward for those who fulfill Khomeini’s fatwa.

Rushdie was attacked on August 12 on the stage of the institute before his performance in New York State. He was stabbed in the neck and stomach. Now the writer is in the hospital. He was hooked up to a ventilator. Rushdie is unable to speak and risks losing one of his eyes.

According to NBC News, Hadi Matar, who attacked the writer, sympathized with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces). This became known when checking his social networks. However, “unambiguous links” between the suspect and the IRGC have not been established.
