United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to condemn the annexation Russia a large part of the territory Ukraine and demanded that Russia withdraw its troops from these areas. The General Assembly automatically passed the resolution for discussion, prompted by Russia’s use of a veto in the Security Council when its attempt at annexation was condemned.
The resolution, which also called on countries to “refrain from any action that could be interpreted as recognition of such an altered status,” marked the strongest support to date for Ukraine from the 193-nation General Assembly since the start of the Russian invasion.
Russia called the resolution a “politicized and openly provocative” instrument and assured that it was a confrontational message that “could nullify all efforts in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis.”
