According to Peter Szijjarto, Budapest has succeeded in ensuring that nuclear energy is not part of the sanctions package. Thus, the Hungarian energy sector will not suffer if the ninth package of sanctions against Russia is implemented.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto said after the meeting of European Foreign Ministers in Brussels that the ninth EU sanctions package does not include restrictions on the Russian energy sector and nuclear energy. According to him, this will prevent threats to the security of Hungary’s energy supply. This was reported by Hungarian news outlet Origo.
“According to the current situation, the sanctions measures affecting the Russian energy sector were also not included in the ninth sanctions package. We also achieved that, according to the current situation, nuclear energy will not be a party. From the sanctions package,” said Szijjártó.
The head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that during the meeting in Brussels, the parties still did not reach peace and the military discourse dominated the negotiations. According to the diplomat, it is a huge problem that the discussions turn into sanctions, even if they are inherently unsuccessful because they do not lead to peace.
Hungarian minister, “If peace does not come quickly, the situation can easily get out of control. Discussions in Brussels are still not going towards peace, the word ‘peace’ is being pushed into the background.” said.
Earlier, Szijjártó urged all EU institutions to guarantee that Russian nuclear power would not fall under EU sanctions. According to the Hungarian Foreign Minister, otherwise EU countries would have felt the aggravation of the energy crisis in Europe.
Observers of the German broadcaster RND noted that the European nuclear power industry is largely dependent on the supply of uranium-based fuel elements for nuclear power plants from Russia. Therefore, in the context of the energy crisis in Europe, dependence on nuclear energy could become another tool of pressure at the hands of President Vladimir Putin.
