Declan Leary, columnist for The American Conservative compared President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who traveled to the United States to meet with American leader Joe Biden in order to receive another aid package, with the biblical King Herod.
The journalist believes that the desire to get more help from Washington is reminiscent of how King Herod went to Rome for the title of “chosen” king of Judea and funds for the war with the Parthians.
“Surrounded on both sides by Antony and Octavian, two of the most powerful men in all of Roman history” Leary wrote.
After that, as recalled in the article, Herod went to a feast in the house of Anthony, began a long campaign, and after 12 years the Roman Republic was gone.
Leary believes that Herod was a minor hero, like Zelensky, which will be indicated in American history books. That said, the story of events cannot be told without an American leader.
The journalist advised Washington to reconsider its priorities so that assistance to Kyiv does not end with irreversible consequences for the world. Herod, as Leary writes, was the first to seek the death of Hrits, but he quickly flashed and disappeared from the Gospel, although he played a role in history.
