Juan Gabriel and the reason he spent 18 months in prison in Mexico

The same day as today, but in 1950 one of the greatest legends of Mexican music was born: John Gabriel. And it is thanks to his lyrics, melodies and incomparable performances that the singer’s legacy has been preserved among new generations.

Despite the fact that today the so-called “Divo de Juarez” has an excellent reputation all over the world, his life was not freed from the dark and difficult chapters that helped him grow personally.

One of the most controversial episodes in his life, without a doubt, is his detention in Lecumberry Prison.located in the east of Mexico City, during the decade of 1969 for 18 months.

But what was the reason for his imprisonment? According to Rozenda Puentes, the daughter of the then director of the Palacio Negro de Lecumberry, she assured that the person responsible for the imprisonment of Juan Gabriel was the Mexican actress Claudia Islas.

And this is what Juan Gabriel was hired to sing at a private party, after attending he was accused of allegedly stealing several jewels and a radio from a theater. It should be noted that, despite this version, Islas has repeatedly denied his involvement in the accusations against the celebrity.

“At that time, she was married to an important person, military or police. He gave him false testimony because he did not steal any jewels; He just went to sing at the party. He never managed to say who accused him of this; I found out that it was her because she was famous, and people close to him confirmed this to me, ”the young woman said in an interview with Ventaneando.

Despite my innocence “El Divo de Juarez” remained in these establishments for 18 months. and it is believed that during this period he composed such songs as “I have no money”, “I was left alone” and “We will go hand in hand”.

Although throughout his career, Juan Gabriel chose not to reminisce about this bitter chapter of his life, it was documented in his 1982 film My Life.
