Elon Musk Meets House Leaders at the Capitol

CEO of Tesla and Twitter, Elon Muskmet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy and Democratic leader Hakim Jeffreys at the US Capitol in Washington, DC on Thursday evening.

McCarthy, leaving the meeting with Musk in his office, declined to comment, saying only: “He came to my birthday.” The Republican MP from California turned 58 on Thursday.

Musk also briefly met with the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffreys, who was meeting with McCarthy at the time Musk arrived, according to a source familiar with the meeting.

After the meeting, Musk tweeted that he had met with McCarthy and Jeffreys “to discuss how to keep this platform fair for both parties.”

The meeting between Elon Musk and congressional leaders comes as the House Oversight Committee plans to hold a hearing next month on Twitter and how it responded to the Hunter Biden laptop story, CNN reported.

Members of the Republican House of Representatives vowed strict oversight of major technology and social media platformswho was accused of conservative censorship.

The group has invited three former Twitter employees to testify and is actively negotiating with them to appear before the committee, according to several people familiar with the matter. The committee is considering Feb. 8 as a possible hearing date, sources told CNN.
