Sources within the alliance say its members understand that a new secretary-general should be elected, but due to force majeure, Stoltenberg’s mandate could be extended for a year.
The mandate of incumbent NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expires in September 2023, but they want to extend his mandate for another year due to the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Politico.
A senior Alliance official told reporters that there is a clear understanding among its members that there is a need to “breathe fresh air”, or rather a new secretary general.
The publication reports that the next secretary-general will have to balance himself hard.
“To encourage Alliance members to supply weapons to Ukraine and strengthen their defenses, while encouraging them to stay out of the conflict. Few pass the test for this role,” the message said.
A senior European diplomat said negotiations are currently ongoing at three levels and the most acceptable option is to extend the powers of the current Secretary-General for another year.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte are also among the candidates for the NATO presidency. The candidacy of Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Slovak President Zuzana Caputova are also being discussed.
