The European Union calls on Moscow to fulfill its obligations under the START Treaty and not to interfere in the control of Russia’s nuclear arsenals.
The European Union attaches great importance to the new agreement on the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive weapons (START) and therefore calls on Moscow to fulfill its obligations under this agreement. This was announced by the EU Foreign Service on 21 February.
The publication says that the European Union has urged the Russian Federation to facilitate inspection work on Russian territory as part of the implementation of Treaty norms. In other words, Russia has been asked to allow the United States to inspect its nuclear arsenals.
“The EU calls on Russia to fulfill its obligations under the Treaty by facilitating New START inspections on Russian territory,” the statement said.
The EU also expressed regret over President Vladimir Putin’s statement yesterday regarding the suspension of Russia’s participation in the nuclear arms reduction treaty, as it believes Brussels START makes a significant contribution to international and European security.
“Suspension or termination of the Treaty without an appropriate follow-up agreement will undermine the European security architecture and significantly retard arms control efforts, which is not in the interest of New START member states or any other country.” highlighted in the document.
Recall, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, commenting on Vladimir Putin’s speech before the Federal Assembly, said that the Russian leader communicated like a terrorist. According to him, the only difference is that the terrorists act with masks, while Putin and those who attend the meeting do not even hide their faces.
On February 21, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that Putin’s remarks on the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START Treaty were another provocative move by Moscow. The diplomat believes that Russia continues to deliberately destroy the existing architecture of nuclear disarmament.
