Peru recalls its ambassador to Mexico in response to AMLO statements

Accompanied by Prime Minister Alberto Otarola and Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi Boluarte addressed the nation with a very brief message in which she recorded her displeasure with the Mexican President and announced that bilateral relations will be reduced to business managers.

“I strongly reject the statements of the President of Mexico about the internal affairs of Peru and his unacceptable questions that he repeatedly asks about the constitutional and democratic origins of my government. Mr. López decided to support the coup d’état of former President Pedro Castillo, the one that provoked the unanimous rejection of the institutions that make up the democratic order in Peru,” said President Boluarte, who was discussed by the population as it was he who crossed the presidential strip on December 7, after the failed state Castillo’s coup.

“I have ordered the final retirement of our ambassador to the United Mexican States, and thus diplomatic relations between Peru and Mexico are formally at the level of business managers,” Boluarte said.

Before Boluart’s decision, The President of Mexico reaffirmed his solidarity with Lilia Paredes, wife of Pedro Castillo.after meeting her at the National Palace on Thursday.

López Obrador spoke very harshly about Boluarte, calling her a “fake president.”

López Obrador indicated that “Mexico will continue to support the unjustly and illegally deposed President (Pedro Castillo) and will continue to demand his release. He can’t be in jail, it’s a big injustice,” AMLO told media. repeated his accusation that Boluarte was a “false president”.

These AMLO statements were followed by Boluarte’s announcement of a decision to cut off high-level diplomatic relations with Mexico.

Mexican reaction

The Mexican government on Saturday expressed regret over the recall of Peru’s ambassador to Mexico, Manuel Gerardo Talavera, and at the same time announced that it would keep its embassy in Lima as it benefits both companies.

The diplomatic and consular mission in the Andean country will continue to function “to develop ties between our peoples and to assist the Mexican community in Peru,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
