Man accused of making death threats to Michigan Jewish officials

On Wednesday, the man was charged with Twitter threaten kill Jewish officials state government Michigan.

The criminal lawsuit filed against Jack Carpenter III of Tipton, Michigan does not name those who were threatened, but Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, The Democrat tweeted Thursday morning that she was one of those threatened.

“The FBI has confirmed that I was the target of the defendant in this case, who was heavily armed,” Nessel wrote in the message.

A Justice Department statement said Jack Eugene Carpenter, 41, was charged with using his Twitter account to “threat Jewish government officials in Michigan.”

“No one should be threatened or violently persecuted for their religious beliefs,” prosecutor Don Ison, who is leading the case, said in a statement.

The man, whose Twitter account remains active, posted messages that he was heading to Michigan to “punish with death all those who are Jewish in the government of Michigan.”

You can also read posts on social media in which a man claims he was fired from the University of Michigan for refusing to get a Covid shot, and where he claims to be an “enemy of the state.”

The court statement stated that Carpenter had three semi-automatic pistols, as well as a shotgun and two hunting rifles.

Carpenter, who was arrested in mid-February in Texas, was already under investigation for the theft of another firearm.

Defendant was transferred to Detroit on March 3. where he remains under arrest until his first court hearing is held on Friday.

The threats against Nessel came less than a year after three men belonging to a far-right militia were found guilty of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
