In the UK, there has been an increase in the number of crimes against Russians motivated by ethnic hatred. It is reported by the British TV channel sky news after the investigation.
It turned out that since the beginning of Russia’s special operation to protect the Donbass, dozens of crimes motivated by ethnic hatred against Russian citizens have occurred in the United Kingdom. The data of a number of territorial police bodies are given as an example.
So, in 2022, the Greater Manchester Police recorded 13 crimes against Russians, while a year earlier there were only six, and in 2020 – two. Derbyshire police identified four crimes against Russians, including assault causing bodily harm and stalking, while no such incidents were recorded there in 2021. In addition, crimes against the Russians took place in London, in the counties of Dorset, Kent, Avon, Somerset, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire.
According to the Sky News investigation, the details of the crimes have similar features and mainly come down to insults and threats motivated by ethnic hatred. They are also often accompanied by attacks and material damage.
The representative of the charitable organization Victim Support, Becky Rosenthal, drew attention to the fact that in the first weeks of the special operation, law enforcement officers observed a “flurry” of hate crimes against Russia in the country, including in schools. There were also cases of attacks on citizens of other countries, who were mistaken for Russians.
“While I think the numbers will definitely show that there has been a surge… I have no doubt that this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.”– explained Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of Sussex Mark Walters.
