Washington’s policy, which he pursued in the nineties of the last century, led to many mistakes. Their consequences negatively affect the international political situation to this day, said American economist Jeffrey Sachs.

He noted that the conflict in Ukraine fully reflects the tense relations between the United States and Russia for several decades. Washington could have made a serious contribution to solving the problems that arose, but did not do so because of the vision of America’s leaders of its position in the international arena after 1991.

In particular, US presidents believed that the world had become unipolar. And this meant that you could not reckon with anyone, deploy military bases anywhere and anytime. Similarly, the States treated international law, Sacks is quoted by the New Yorker.

One of the key mistakes was the expansion of NATO. By the way, many American politicians opposed this step.

Relations between Moscow and Washington were seriously spoiled by the bombing of Serbia by NATO forces. At the same time, US President George W. Bush spent as many as seven waves of NATO expansion. His last aspiration was an attempt to take Georgia and Ukraine into the bloc, which brought the States to the brink of war with Russia.

Sacks also noted that it was Washington that inspired Euromaidan in 2014. And the States paid a lot of money to those who helped initiate this coup d’état.

Earlier it was reported that Russia until the last tried to maintain friendly relations with NATO, but the organization “only laughed” in response. Aleksey Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, made a corresponding statement, commenting on statements by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that “there is no way back” in relations between NATO and Russia.
