Russia claims control of Bakhmut is key to its invasion of Ukraine

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday (07/03/2023) that The capture of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which has been the scene of months of fighting, is the key to pushing the offensive in the east of the country.

“This city is an important defensive hub for Ukrainian troops in Donbas. Its capture will allow new offensive operations to enter the defense lines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, ”Shoigu said during a teleconference.

Russian paramilitary group “Wagner” attacks Bakhmutwhich destroyed much of the city. The Russians have made some progress in recent weeks, and it seems that they already control the northern, eastern and southern approaches to the city.

For their part, the Ukrainian authorities said on Monday they had no plans to surrender the city and would send reinforcements. Ukraine also expects new weapons from Western allies to arrive soon and has signaled that it is preparing for a counteroffensive.

According to Kyiv, there are currently about 4,000 civilians in Bakhmutwhich is much less than the nearly 70,000 inhabitants it had before the invasion of Vladimir Putin’s regime.
