Wyoming Republican Governor Signs Abortion Pill Ban Bill

Republican Governor Mr. WyomingMark Gordon, signed on Friday a law mandating a total ban on the use of abortion pills in the statein what appears to be the first drug ban in a US state and a severe restriction on right to abortion.

The new law prohibits the sale of “any drug, drug, or other substance with the specific intent to induce or induce an abortion.”

Fifteen other states restrict access to medical abortion, including North Dakota, which has no abortion providers, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nongovernmental organization that advocates for better access to reproductive care.

Wyoming’s abortion pill law goes into effect on July 1st. and will make it illegal to “prescribe, dispense, distribute, sell, or use any drug for the purpose of obtaining or performing an abortion.”

Physicians or others found guilty of violating this law will be held liable for a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison and a $9,000 fine.

Another New Law Restricts Abortions in Wyoming

Republican politician also signed on Friday a law restricting most abortions in the state, except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger, according to local media reports.

Gordon’s decision comes as the US waits for a judge in Texas to rule on a case that will determine national access to the abortion pill mifepristone.

The Association of Physicians Against Abortion filed a lawsuit against Judge Matthew Kachmarik with the goal is to force the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to withdraw approval of the drug andin the country

Mifepristone, which was approved by the FDA in 2000, has been at the center of the US abortion debate in recent weeks.

In early March, Walgreens decided it would not distribute abortion pills in states with Republican governments or states where Republican officials threatened to sue if the drugs were offered.

The company’s decision comes after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a ruling allowing the sale of abortion drugs at its facilities.

Mifeprostone is usually used with misoprostol to terminate a pregnancy before the end of the third month of pregnancy.

Abortions using this type of medication account for 54% of abortions in the US. over the past two years, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

The court’s decision to ban abortion pills will be one of the biggest disputes over reproductive and abortion rights in the United States since the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade last year.
