Forbes magazine has released a list of the most expensive major league franchises for the 2023 season. The median value of the organization increased by 12% to $2.32 billion.
The New York Yankees are the most valuable team in all of baseball with a net worth of $7.1 billion., which is 18% more than last year. The New York-based team earned $143 million from TV shows on the YES network.
The average audience of the YES network in 2022 was 227,000 people. The Yankees were the most expensive team in MLB. every year since the list was first published in December 1998.
The next team is the Los Angeles Dodgers with $4.8 billion, up 18%. compared to last season. The Los Angeles franchise lost in the first divisional round of the postseason in 2022.
In third place are the Boston Red Sox with $4.5 billion, up 15% from 2023. Boston didn’t qualify for the postseason in 2022, but extended big contracts like Rafael Devers.
Next up is the Chicago Cubs at $4,100, up 8% from 2022. Chicago also failed to qualify for the playoffs and they are in a period of restructuring after leaving several stars such as Javier Baez, Wilson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo, Chris Bryant and others.
Rounding out the top five are the San Francisco Giants, with a value of $3.7 billion.. San Francisco is also in the process of restructuring and was trying to sign Aaron Judge for over $300 million during the offseason.
Overall, the 30 baseball teams earned $2.3 billion in local TV revenue in 2022, or 22% of their total $10.44 billion in revenue. (before debt servicing).
On the other hand, the last team on the list is the Miami Marlins, which is worth $1,000 million.. In recent years, Team Miami has been unable to compete despite having the likes of Sandy Alcantara, C.Y. Young of the National League.
