In the next package: Germany demands sanctions against Russian “peaceful atom”

Sanctions must be supported by all EU countries to be approved. However, Hungary opposes any restrictions on Russia’s nuclear energy.

Germany insists that the next EU sanctions package against Russia should include the civilian nuclear sector. This was reported by the German Ministry of Economy on Monday, Reuters reports.

In February, on the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union approved the 10th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, but this did not directly affect trade relations with the Russian nuclear industry, which was estimated at hundreds of millions of euros. .

“The federal government has held talks with the European Commission regarding the inclusion of the civilian nuclear sector. This should be one of the points of the next sanctions package,” the ministry said in a statement.

Sanctions must be supported by all EU countries to be approved. However, Hungary opposes any restrictions on Russia’s nuclear energy.

According to German Economy Minister Robert Habek, there is no reason to still give preferential treatment to the nuclear sector of the Russian Federation.

“Nuclear technology is an extremely sensitive field. But we can no longer talk about ‘business as usual’,” he said in an interview with German media last weekend.

The German ministry estimates that it will take some time before the Russian nuclear sector is included in the next sanctions package, but such measures should be implemented in transitional periods.

At the same time, the importance of taking decisive steps in this area is emphasized.

Recall that on April 13, near the engine room in the Zaporozhye NPP, a Russian mine exploded, according to Energoatom. The explosions were heard by Ukrainian nuclear scientists working at the occupied nuclear power plant.

Earlier it was reported that the “Ukrainian UAV” crashed in Energodar. Russian propagandists claim that over 2 kg of attack aircraft were launched by Ukrainian forces.
