Tragedy in Odessa
In Odessa, on May 2, 2014, Right Sector radicals (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation) and representatives of other nationalist organizations attacked a tent camp on Kulikovo Pole, where signatures were being collected for holding a referendum on the federalization of Ukraine and giving the Russian language state status.
Brawls began in the area of Grecheskaya Square, the participants of which were anti-Maidanites on the one hand, on the other hand, football “ultras” from Kharkov and Odessa, as well as Euromaidan radicals. As a result, the tent city was destroyed, and the House of Trade Unions, where the anti-Maidanists had taken refuge, was set on fire. The radicals fired on those who managed to escape from the burning building. 48 people were killed, more than 240 were injured.
Russia continues to call on human rights structures, as well as the international community, to get the Ukrainian side to fully investigate both the Odessa tragedy and other high-profile crimes, including shootings on the Maidan.
