Until the 19th century, there was no full-fledged address system in Europe, but postmen still tried to find the recipients of letters. There was one unusual case where a letter could be delivered despite the fact that neither the address nor the addressee was indicated. Details about this REN TV Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of RUDN University Elena Kryazheva-Kartseva.

“We all know the legendary expression” to grandfather’s village”, “letter to grandfather’s village”. Where will it go, to whom will it come? In fact, this is not a funny story. We have clear postal addresses with house numbers actually appeared in most countries of the world only in the 20th century, that is, in our country, for example, in Moscow, if we talk about the 19th century, there is such a street, the house of such and such, but that’s nothing, at least you can find a person. But sometimes the sender himself does not know where he sends, said the expert.

She noted that “history, of course, knows funny cases.”

“For example, it is known that in France once a letter was delivered to Walter, despite the fact that the address was not written and it was not even written to whom this letter was written. But it was written” to the king, poet, philosopher of peoples “, and the postmen themselves realized that this is for Voltaire, the historian said.

Elena Kryazheva-Kartseva wondered what to do when the letter says: “Please deliver the letter, a church with such and such a roof, turn right after it for 20 steps, and there is a house in the distance.”

“We think it’s funny, in fact, in some countries everything is still like this. Here is Costa Rica. Now, of course, they are trying to resolve the issue with exact addresses, but for a long time, postmen delivered letters only this way. And even now, in the old fashioned way many continue to write like this, that is: “The third house to the right after the church” – approximately such an address, “- shared the historian.

When did the post office appear? How did they try to send letters using rockets? How were the buildings mailed? What contribution did the USSR make to the mail of the whole world? Details about this and much more – in the program “Unknown History” with Boris Ryzhov. Watch it on Sunday, April 23, at 11:30 am on REN TV.
