The Mexican government admitted this Friday that there is a “significant” flow of migrants in the last days before the end of TCP 42 from the US next week.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard warned that traffickers known as “polleros” or “coyotes” deceive migrants with a promise to take them to the United States now that the measure is over.
“In recent days, we have seen a very important flow based on deception, namely: they are telling the people of Venezuela and Central America: “Hurry up to get to the United States by crossing Mexico, because May 11 will remove the title 42’”, Ebrard pointed out at the conference.
The flow occurs before the expiration next Thursday of Section 42, a measure passed by Donald Trump (2017-2021) and then President Joe Biden continued to deport migrants based on the COVID-19 pandemic, a state of emergency that is about to end in the US.
In this context, the Mexican Foreign Minister condemned that traffickers “tell people that since this provision will no longer apply, they can now go to the United States, they charge people between $5,000 and $7,000.”
Ebrard, who He did not specify how much migration has increased over these days.recalled that the end of Section 42 would not mean the United States would stop immediately deporting migrants crossing the border into Mexico, so it is “false” that they have a free pass as of May 12.
“This is not true, because the Americans (Americans) have already let us know now that they held a press conference that They are going to stop repatriating people who enter without documents. It is not true. They have other legal norms,” he explained.
The region is facing an unprecedented migration flow in the region with more than 2.76 million undocumented people intercepted by the US at the Mexican border in FY 2022.
Mexico also registered an annual increase of more than 43% in the number “Irregular people in Mexico” in 2022, when 444,439 were discovered.
