In this Wednesday Department of Justice (DOJ) accused the representative George Santos of 13 federal fees, including seven points of electronic fraudthree for money laundering, one for theft of public funds and two counts of materially false statements to the House of Representatives.
CNN reported that a spokesman for the Eastern District of New York confirmed this. Santos is under federal trust.after he was arrested in Melville, Long Island, where the FBI is based.
Santos expected be prosecuted of running a fraudulent political donation scheme, claiming he set up a company and tricked his supporters into contributing funds under the false pretense that the money would go directly to his political campaign.
“This indictment seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and outright misrepresentation,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said.
The money, according to the aforementioned media, did not go directly to his election campaign, but to his personal expenses, which included clothes for luxury designer, as well as payments to their credit cards.
“Together, the allegations in the indictment accuse Santos of relying on repeated dishonesty and deceit to climb the halls of Congress and enrich himself,” Peace added.
