Infamous congressman George Santos pleaded guilty to shoplifting in Brazil. In the US, Santos, by the way, is accused of fraud and money laundering.
In Brazil, the case against him has been under investigation for almost 15 years. According to local authorities, in 2008, Santos wrote two false checks for $430 to buy clothes and shoes from a small store in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.
The store owner contacted the police, and Santos was charged with a crime.
In fact, the congressman pleaded guilty via video link and agreed to pay compensation to the victim in the amount of $2,800 and a fine of $2,000.
Earlier, Santos was released on bail in the United States. The Republican paid $500,000 for his freedom.
Under the terms of the release, Santos can move around in New York and Washington, but he must notify the authorities to travel to other states.
Santos was arrested on May 10 ahead of a trial in his case of fraud and money laundering, as well as providing false information to the US Congress. He was charged, but the congressman denied everything. Santos faces up to 20 years in prison.
