Japan has not withdrawn from the Arctic LNG 2 project and, if everything goes according to plan, is going to increase the supply of Russian liquefied natural gas by 2 million tons per year by 2026. About this in an interview with RIA Novosti informed Consul General of Russia in Sapporo Sergey Marin.

He noted that the consortium of Mitsui & Co. and Japan’s national oil and metals company JOGMEC retained a ten percent stake in the project. At the same time, as Marin recalled, the Japanese side froze new investments in March 2023 amid sanctions.

At the moment, the project has not yet started LNG production. The first line for the production of liquefied natural gas can be launched by the end of 2023, the second and third – in 2024 and 2026, respectively, said Marin.

“If everything goes according to plan, then Japan will add about 2 million tons of LNG per year to the share that it currently receives from Russia, that is, about 9 percent of its total imports.”– said the source of the agency.

In November 2022, Russian Ambassador to Tokyo Mikhail Galuzin announced that Russia could start supplying liquefied natural gas to Japan from the Arctic LNG 2 project as early as 2023.
