DHS warns US remains in ‘heightened threat environment’ in public notice

The United States remains in a “high-threat environment” regarding terrorismas a series of racially and ethnically motivated attacks or conspiracies in recent months has shown, warned Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a public notice posted on Wednesday.

The National Terrorism Alert System Bulletin, released Wednesday, will run through November 24 and was released on the same day as the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers.

Recent events included the May 6 mass shooting in Allen, Texas, in which the shooter “had views consistent with racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism.”

White supremacists and other extremists were implicated in multiple attacks on power substations and other critical US infrastructure last year. Two white supremacists were arrested in February on suspicion of a racist conspiracy to attack the power grid in Baltimore.

The United States is in “heightened environmental threat” as domestic violent extremists and foreign terrorist organizations coalesce to win over supporters and launch attacks, the Department of Homeland Security warned in a bulletin.

The notice added that “perceptions of the 2024 general election cycle”, as well as judicial decisions and socio-political issues they may inspire people to commit acts of violence in the coming months.

DHS specifically named “religious institutions, individuals or events associated with the LGBTQIA+ community, schools, racial and ethnic minorities, and government agencies and personnel, including law enforcement.” potential targets of violence.

The new DHS bulletin, released on Wednesday, also warns thatforeign terrorists continue to call for lone attacks. DHS pointed to a Maine man attacking NYPD cops on New Year’s Eve.

DHS officials told reporters that the recent convictions and convictions of people involved in the January 6 riots “could serve to deter similar violence in the future,” leaving would-be attackers fearful of prosecution, NBC News reported.

“Recent tragic events highlight the growing threat facing our country, and those threats come from violent extremists seeking to advance their ideological beliefs and personal grievances,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mallorcas said in a statement published in the DHS Bulletin.

DHS officials said they remain concerned about threats from entities in other states such as Iran, as well as a potential threat from terrorist groups such as the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.though some officials in recent months have downplayed the possibility of a terrorist attack by foreign terrorists on US soil.
