Haiti records at least 160 lynchings per month

At least 160 suspected gangsters have been caught, lynched and burned alive in Haiti since the launch of the so-called Operation bwa kale last April to physically eliminate armed gang members wreaking havoc across the country, the report said. This is reported by an independent human rights body.

“This is a popular reaction to the extreme brutality of the gangs, because law enforcement is powerless, the state is unable to use its monopoly on legitimate violence, and the international community is turning around and entangled in the rhetoric of promises,” the message says. Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights (CARDH), which provided the data.

Of these alleged lynchings, 134 took place in the West and 9 in Artibonite, the two Haitian departments most affected by gang violence.

Citing local sources, Le Nouvelliste reported two deaths in clashes that took place this Friday “between the armed group Grand Grif and a group led by Ty Mepri” in the Petit Rivière de l’Artibonite area. commune”.

Kidnappings and murders are on the decline

As a result of lynchings between April 24 and May 24, 2023, kidnappings, as well as other forms of gang violence, dropped sharply, according to a CARDH report.

During this period, there were almost no individual abductions, and only 43 murders were committed in the country, compared with 146 for the whole of April.

“This movement must be controlled to ensure lasting security, otherwise the gangs’ response will be worse than the atrocities that preceded the bwa kale,” CARDH said, pointing to the massacre carried out by the bandits in retaliation against a civilian brigade that killed 12 people. .

The NGO believes that the civil movement is a reaction to the population, handed over to be torn to pieces by armed gangs.

Haiti is in crisis in almost every order, and the government has requested – without finding a firm answer – the help of the international military, which will face the actions of the gangs, in order to pacify the country and be able to attack other great disasters that will affect the country more than the depression of the continent.

This Friday, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported that 4.9 million people in Haiti, almost half of the population, suffer from acute hunger, an increase of 200,000 people in just five months.
