Death toll from three train crash in India rises to more than 230 dead and 900 injured

More than 230 people died and about 900 were injured in the collision of three trains. India Friday, one of the worst railway accidents in the recent history of the country.

According to Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena, two passenger trains and a freight train collided in the city of Balasore in the eastern state of Odisha.

At least 233 people died and 900 were injured., Jena said on Twitter.

The death toll is expected to rise and wounded while the teams carry out a colossal rescue operation, Jena said during a press conference.

The passenger train is believed to have derailed before colliding with another on an adjacent track on Friday evening.

Indian Railways said two service trains were involved, the Coromandel Express and the Howrah Superfast Express.

More than 200 ambulances were dispatched to the scene in Balasore district, Odisha chief secretary Pradeep Jena said, who previously said more than 100 more medics had been mobilized.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was distraught over the incident and thought about the families of the victims..

“Rescue work is underway at the scene of the accident, all possible assistance is being provided to the victims,” the message says. Modi tweeted.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Amit Shah called the incident “deeply disturbing”.

A day of mourning has been declared in the state of Odisha.

India’s extensive rail network has outdated infrastructure and poor maintenance, factors that are often the cause of accidents.
