Mexico approves new HIV drug

New HIV drug, in addition to 149 medical supplies approvedwere authorized by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofépris) of Mexico, the agency said.

Cofepris, an affiliate of the Ministry of Health, indicated in a statement that, according to the latest “Two Weeks Therapeutic Expansion Report”, In the categories of medicines, medical devices and clinical trials, 149 medical devices are allowed.

The report, corresponding to the first half of June, “reports the authorization of 25 medicines, including efavirenz/lamivudine/tenofovir disoproxil fumaratea novel molecule for the treatment of HIV; and L-asparaginase, a biotechnological agent for the treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia.”

In addition, 116 new medical devices received medical registration, 21 of them for medical care; among them: auxiliary hearing aids, a closed wound drainage system, a system of plates and screws for osteosynthesis, total prostheses of the knee and shoulder joints.

“Eight new clinical trials are authorized: three for cancer drugs, one for children over 12 years of age and adults with severe haemophilia A or B. and a protocol to determine the effects of HIV treatment in people with obesity,” the note notes.

From 1983 to the first half of 2022, 341,313 people were diagnosed with HIV in Mexico, according to a report from the Department of Health’s HIV Surveillance System (SSA). Of these, 278,599 (81.6%) are men and 62,714 (18.4%) are women.
