After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on granting English the status of “language of international communication” and imposing its knowledge on citizens, five petitions were created on the website of the head of the Kiev regime, demanding to withdraw the initiative.
The most popular of the appeals in just a day gained more than three thousand signatures out of the 25 thousand required for Zelensky to consider it. This petition focuses on a paragraph of the bill that proposes to ban the dubbing of films shot in English into Ukrainian – instead, it is proposed to show films in the original with Ukrainian subtitles in cinemas. So, by 2027, 100% of English-language films will no longer be translated.
“The abolition of Ukrainian dubbing, albeit gradual, will inevitably lead to a significant decrease in the popularity of the Ukrainian language, since it was dubbing that at one time contributed to its significant popularization,” – the authors of the petition emphasize.
They also note that the lack of dubbing of films will inevitably scare away some of the audience, which is why not only dubbing studios, but also cinemas will suffer losses.
Recall, on June 28, Zelensky with the status of “urgent” submitted to the Rada a bill obliging all heads of state institutions, officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the police, employees of the tax and customs services and other services to speak English. In addition, it introduces a ban on the dubbing of films shot in English, and also makes it mandatory to study English in kindergartens from 2026.
