The United States can provide Ukraine with security guarantees according to the “Israeli model” until the country joins NATO. The corresponding statement was made by US President Joe Biden.
He noted that now Ukraine is not ready to join the alliance, as it will take time to fulfill a number of conditions, CNN reports.
Biden admitted that he discussed the potential admission of Ukraine to NATO with the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Among other things, I said that the United States, while this process is going on, which will take some time, will be ready to ensure the security that we provide to Israel by supplying weapons, equipment that they need for defense,” – said the American president.
Biden added that such a step would be possible in the event of a ceasefire and the signing of peace agreements.
Recall, on July 7, John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, said that Kyiv had not yet met the requirements for NATO membership.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that he intends to seek the admission of the country to the Alliance under a simplified procedure, while Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Gavrilov expressed hope that at the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, Kiev will receive at least an algorithm of actions for joining the bloc.
Nevertheless, adviser to the head of the office of the Ukrainian president, Mikhail Podolyak, previously admitted that the country would definitely not be accepted into NATO until the end of the conflict. Former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov even wrote that Kyiv was “thrown with membership” in the organization.
