With the ongoing conflict, Ukraine cannot join NATO, but Kyiv should be given security guarantees. The corresponding statement was made by the Ambassador of Latvia to Germany Alda Vanaga.

The alliance’s summit in Vilnius will be historic, she said, and should send a clear message on how the bloc can better protect its eastern flank. In addition, Vanaga believes that the alliance should demonstrate the existence of a plan to admit Ukraine to NATO, TASS reports.

“Now in the conditions of war it is impossible to accept it, but we are also discussing very intensively what security guarantees can be provided to Ukraine before joining,” said the diplomat.

Vanaga also noted that we are talking about the ability of the countries of the bloc to achieve something together or only separately. This is what will be discussed at the meeting in Vilnius.

The day before, US President Joe Biden said that NATO is not unanimous on the issue of accepting Ukraine into a military bloc, which Kyiv constantly insists on.

The NATO summit in Vilnius will be held on July 11-12. Secretary General of the organization Jens Stoltenberg said that the meeting will approve a multi-year plan for military support to Ukraine.

The Kremlin has repeatedly noted the potential threat to Russia that comes from NATO. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov drew attention to the fact that the alliance continues to demonstrate an aggressive line towards Russia, which once again confirms the correctness of the decision to launch a special operation.
