After espionage investigation: Russian embassy employees leave Moldova (video)

Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration said the reduction in the number of Russian diplomats was aimed at ensuring that there are fewer people in the country “trying to destabilize the country”.

A number of diplomats and employees of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Chisinau left the territory of Moldova. This was reported by NewsMaker on August 14.

It was reported that 22 diplomats and 23 representatives from the technical delegation of the Russian Embassy left Chisinau. The relevant decision was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI) of Moldova.

The aforementioned Russian citizens were taken to the airport by two buses and many cars. Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Chisinau announced that it was suspending the consular department’s work from August 5 for “technical reasons”.

The publication also mentions that MFAEI summoned the Russian Ambassador to Moldova, Oleg Vasnetsov, after a journalistic investigation was published about the monitoring of high-level officials in Chisinau by Russian special services using equipment on the roof of the Russian embassy.

Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu announced that the number of Russian diplomats accredited in Moldova should be reduced. According to him, diplomatic departments should not undermine stability in the country.

“This was done so that there are fewer people in Moldova involved in the destabilization of the country,” the minister said.

The Realitatea.md edition has released a video showing how Russian embassy employees leave Chisinau.

Espionage of Russian special services in Moldova: what is known

On July 24, The Insider published an investigation into Russian special services spying on authorities in Moldova with the help of a series of devices. It has been reported that the number of transmitting devices and dish antennas on the roof of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau increases every year.

Journalists learned that those who regularly appear on the embassy’s roof are liaison officers from the GRU and SVR, associated with hacker groups that hacked the mails of Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and Hillary Clinton.

Shortly after the investigation was published, on July 26, the Moldovan government announced that the number of accredited diplomats and technical and administrative staff at the Russian Embassy was reduced from 84 to 25.

On July 27, the head of the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova took a photo mocking Russian diplomats in Chisinau on the roof of the building where the diplomatic mission is located. It showed that there was not a single plate on the roof of the EU Delegation.
