The authorities reported that A mother drowned trying to save her 10-year-old son when the current swept him into a popular waterfall in a New Hampshire forest.
The eldest son of the woman, who also jumped to the rescue, got stuck on rocks and was rescued by his father, according to a Massachusetts police spokesman.
Melissa Bagley, 44, was a member of a family of six from Lynn, Massachusetts. On Tuesday afternoon, they visited Franconia Falls in the White Mountain National Forest. and they came to the falls, which are a few miles up the picturesque Cancamagus Highway.
Sergeant Heidi Murphy of the State Department of Fisheries and Wildlife said in a press release reviewed by ABC News that the child slipped and fell into the water, but could not save himself from the fast current circulating under the waterfall.
Bagley “jumped into the river to help his son and immediately got in trouble,” he said.
Two other children jumped in to help their brother and mother. They were able to pull the boy out of the water, but the 18-year-old brother who tried to help got stuck on the rocks, Murphy said.
The father was looking for Bagley and found her in the water under the waterfall. He started cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not be revived.Oh, said Murphy.
The father then approached his son, who was trapped by stones, and carried him to safety. According to police, the son was injured and was taken to the hospital.
The Everett Police Department has determined that Lieutenant Sean Bagley is the husband of Melissa Bagley.
“While we appreciate all those who have extended a helping hand, we ask that Lieutenant Bagley and his family have the time and space to mourn the passing of Melissa,” the department said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Franconia Falls is a popular hiking and swimming spot in the White Mountain National Forest. People can slide off flagstones into pools of water, but the New England Falls website advises people to “take a moment to watch the turbulence in the pool below the falls to help you assess the risks.”
Other people drowned in the falls, including a 38-year-old man in July 2017, a 17-year-old hiker in August 2015, and a 39-year-old man in October 2003.

An unidentified teenager and a group of friends from Brooklyn bathed in a waterfall called Faun’s Leap located along Caterskill Creek in the Catskill Mountains.the Athens Volunteer Fire Service wrote in a press release posted on Facebook.
Authorities say the teen and his friend jumped off the Faun Leap together around 3:20 p.m. and landed in the water at the base of the falls.
Both struggled to swim out of the strong hydraulic current created by the waterfall. Another swimmer was able to rescue the teen’s friend but was unable to reach the deceased 16-year-old, the fire department said.
Divers from the New York State Police, the Green County Sheriff’s Office and the Athens Fire Department eventually found the teen’s body and pronounced him dead at the scene, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
