Biden will visit the island on Monday amid criticism from the political opposition for his silence for four days after the tragedy that claimed the lives of 114 people, and from residents who do not expect too much either from his arrival or from a promise of what to do after the loss of everything.
“My heart, prayers and attention go out to the victims of the Maui wildfires and their families.”Biden’s statement said he would meet with survivors and authorities tomorrow.
“I know how much a loss can affect families and communities, and I know that nothing can replace the loss of a life,” said the president, who will be traveling with his wife, Jill.
The Democrat also assured the people of Maui that his administration will respect “sacred lands, cultures and traditions” in recovery efforts.

Biden commitments
Biden first spoke about the fires on August 10 and didn’t do so until Tuesday the 15th, when the death toll rose to 99.A barrage of criticism from the Republican opposition and some media outlets has already hit him.
Today, in a statement, the president listed an extensive list of actions his administration has taken to help the island’s residents.

“From day one, we immediately authorized three grants for firefighting assistance, and as soon as Governor Josh Green requested a major disaster declaration, I signed it,” he recalls.
Also noted that they had mobilized more than 1,000 federal personnel on Maui, including about 450 search and rescue team members.among other help, which he detailed.
“Jill and I can’t wait to join the brave rescuers in Lahaina tomorrow to spend time with families and community members and see firsthand what it will take to rebuild the community,” the President said.
“We’ll be here for as long as it takes for Maui,” he said.
