“End of an era”: Greece stopped servicing Russian air defense systems and handed them over to Ukraine – media

According to journalists, the cost of Russian systems rejected by Greece is over one billion euros.

Greece is suspending funding for programs to support and maintain Soviet-style Tor-M1 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) and obsolete OSA-AKM and will not sign new contracts. They can be transferred to Ukraine, according to Pronews.

According to the publication, this is the end of the era of Russian weapons systems in the Greek Armed Forces.

“This means that the times of complete decommissioning are now ‘counted’, as the available spare parts will only last a few months and they have very little stock as the ministry has not even fulfilled the current contract,” the journalists said. .

The Greek Army and Air Force are armed with a total of 21 Tor-M1 self-propelled missile systems and 38 OSA-AK/AKM self-propelled guided missile systems from the SHORADS class with a maximum range of 10-12 kilometers.

Of the 38 systems, 19 are versions of Osa-AK and 20 are upgraded versions of Osa-AKM. All of them are located on the Aegean Sea islands. These are legacy systems but still reliable for protecting the first line from attack and transport helicopters as well as UAVs.

According to the publication, the cost of abandoned Russian systems is over one billion euros. Journalists think they will also be sent to Ukraine, possibly via third countries. The decision to withdraw them is purely political.

Recall, on August 21, it was reported that Greece would train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets. The President of Ukraine described this as an important outcome for the aviation coalition and spoke to the head of government about Ukraine’s capabilities to restore global security.

Earlier it was learned that on May 11, Greece signed a contract for the modernization of the Storm Shadow missiles. Storm Shadow carriers in the Greek Air Force are the Mirage 2000 and Rafale fighters.
