“The last godfather” of the Sicilian mafia: Cosa Nostra boss Messina Denaro died, media

According to media reports, Mafia died of a protracted illness. He has been hiding from the authorities since 1993. His search was complicated by the fact that police only had photographs of him from a young age, so they used computer technology to reconstruct his appearance.

Matteo Messina Denaro, known as the “last godfather” of the Sicilian mafia, died after a long illness. He was 61 years old. The Guardian reported this on September 25.

His death occurred in the hospital where he was staying under the name Andrea Bonafede. Pierluigi Biondi, mayor of the province of L’Aquila, confirmed this information.

Messina Denaro was one of the bosses of the Sicilian criminal organization Cosa Nostra and had been in hiding since 1993. He was detained in a private clinic in Palermo in January 2023. He received periodic tumor treatment. His health condition deteriorated and he was transferred from the maximum security prison to the hospital.

Messina Denaro was known for his involvement in the organization of many crimes committed by Cosa Nostra. He was also accused of organizing the murders of dozens of people. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002.

He was known for his luxurious lifestyle, wearing expensive suits, Rolex watches and Ray-Ban sunglasses. His arrest was a significant event because the search was complicated by the lack of new photographs and computer technology had to be used to reconstruct his appearance.

Messina Denaro refused to cooperate with authorities and expose Cosa Nostra’s crimes. He was a key figure in many brutal murders, including the murders of judges, including Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Investigators fear that with his death, many mysteries and secrets of Cosa Nostra, which remained faithful to the silent code of the mafia (omerta) to the end, will go to the grave with him.

Let’s remember, in April, there was news in the Italian press that members of the Italian mafia offered financial aid to the young man’s family because they “accidentally” killed him.

It was also reported that Brian Catellanos, the 64-year-old leader of the Florencia 13 gang in the USA, spent more than 30 years in a maximum security prison and died of cancer there. He managed to leave a chilling final note for the young gangsters.
