Republicans in the US Congress are “holding new aid to Ukraine hostage,” John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, said in a conversation with reporters.
“There is bipartisan support for Ukraine in Congress, but we have been deceived by a number of Republicans who want to hold Ukraine’s support hostage by (demanding) a series of pretty radical border measures.” – he said.
Kirby noted that assistance to Kyiv could have already been approved if the position of the Republicans had not prevented this. He also recalled the words of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, who reported “a great risk that Ukraine could lose” without American aid supplies.
Biden, according to Kirby, is ready to discuss border issues. The administration, as he emphasized, has already agreed on the allocation of six billion dollars to strengthen the borders.
Let us remind you that for several weeks the US Congress has been unable to vote on the allocation of funds to provide further military assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, the White House has already warned that the US authorities are running out of money to support Kyiv.
In this regard, the US presidential administration initiated a “secret briefing” in the Congressional Senate. However, several scandals were created at the meeting, and representatives of the Republican Party left it altogether.
On December 5, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called on his party colleagues not to support the aid to Ukraine requested by the White House. We are talking about US President Joe Biden’s request for $106 billion. Of this money, more than 60 billion were planned to be spent on the needs of Ukraine. On December 5, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the United States would be held responsible for Ukraine’s defeat unless Congress approved additional funds to help Ukraine.
