We also remembered others: Austria may slow down the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU

The head of the Austrian government, Kar Nehammer, said that decisions in the EU should continue to be taken according to the principle of “unanimity”. He also noted that he had some questions about the 67 billion euro increase in expenditures.

On December 11, Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer made some statements to members of the Austrian Parliament. One of the topics was the launch of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. The politician proposed to coordinate this process with the actions of other candidate countries. This is stated in the minutes of Nehammer’s communications with parliaments, published by the institution’s press service.

Important

Orban’s party submitted a resolution to parliament against negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU

A note on the parliament’s website stated that the Chancellor spoke to parliamentarians ahead of the meeting of EU heads of state and government in the European Council. Nehammer noted that Austria generally supports Moldova’s accession to the EU, as well as Ukraine. He believes this will be the “engine” of the changes our two countries need. But there are some comments.

The politician reminded that the EU accession procedure for the Western Balkan countries is continuing. The Austrian government believes that Ukraine and Moldova should be on the same conditions. He therefore concluded that he would oppose the “expedited procedure”.

“Now, as a sign of solidarity, the possibility of accession should also be offered to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova,” the press service said, categorically opposing the “expedited procedure” for the two countries.”

Negammer also has a few more points to make. First, Austria continues to insist on the principle of “unanimity” where decisions are made by 100 percent consensus. Secondly, there are objections to the EU fiscal programme, which will increase by 67 billion euros by 2027. These funds include an aid package that the EU can provide to Ukraine to support the economy.

Ukraine’s accession to the EU – details

We should also point out that a decision may be taken to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession at the next summit of EU member states. Today Hungary openly opposes this. At first, the government of this country demanded special protection for national minorities. Later, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made new statements and said that he would oppose this.

On December 11, possible resistance from Slovakia became known. This country in particular may prevent the start of negotiations due to “corruption and land issues”.

We would like to remind you that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said a few words to Viktor Orban during a chance meeting at the inauguration of the new President of Argentina. After this, Zelensky flew to the United States to speak at the American Congress once again.
